Device to alter the orbit of the earth
1997

Chicago, IL
Bulb, stand, shade, extension cord

This device exploits the fact that light acts as if it has mass
in order to alter the shape of the world's orbit around the sun
If the device were left on for approximately one billion years,
the orbit of the earth would elongate by about one meter.

Two alternate settings are possible:
if the bulb were pointed to the East,
then the device would slow down the rotation of the earth
until there were eternal night on one side,
and eternal day on the other;
if the bulb were pointed to the West,
the device would speed up the rotation of the earth
until it was spinning so fast
that things would fly off at the equator.
